A parked domain is one that is taken, but it is not linked to another service - web or e mail hosting. In other words, this type of domain address won't open any real content in case you type it inside an Internet browser, but nobody can take it as you've already registered it and you are its owner. The main advantage of getting a domain and parking it afterwards is the fact that you can keep it and not stress that somebody else might register it in the meantime if, for instance, the site for it is not ready yet. You may create a temporary Under Construction webpage for a parked domain name while you're working on the web site, or forward it to another web address - temporarily or permanently. The latter option can be employed if you have already registered domain.com, for instance, and you get domain.net and domain.org, so that you can protect a brand name or a trademark. In this situation, the .net and .org domains can be parked and directed to the .com because you don't need different sites for them.
